About the Temple
Restoration by Khoday Foundation under the able guidance of
Srihari Khoday
The Sri Venugopala Swamy Temple located at Hosa Kannambadi, near Krishna Raja Sagara, is an example of Hoysala architecture in Karnataka, India. This temple was built in the 12th century AD around the same time as the Chennakesava Temple at Somanathapura, Mysore district.
When the KRS dam was conceived in 1909, the temple was condemned for submersion. By 1930, the entire erstwhile village of Kannambadi was completely buried underwater. However, the temple would resurface whenever the water levels in the reservoir dropped, typically during drought years. This was most evident around the year 2000.For more than 70 years the temple lay underwater, when the Khoday Foundation under the guidance of liquor baron and philanthropist Mr. Sri Hari Khoday took up the task of relocating and restoring the temple. He instantly decided to rebuild the dilapidated monument at a safer place. He took the permissions from the Government and planned for the next course of action.

He arranged for the photographs of the temple from various angles so as to construct the same. The team had shot the original temple on video, took over 16,000 plus photographs. Each and every stone was marked and numbered. Bhoomi pooja was performed and the work started. Stones were removed, and they were arranged in an open field. He engaged masons, trained artisans and sculptors with half a dozen experts from Tamil Nadu for rebuilding the temple at Hosa Kannambadi. Damaged and missing idols were remade and replaced. Like a penance he dedicated a valuable decade and to his gratification the mammoth structure was standing at its best.
The magnificent Sri Venugopal swamy temple is set beside the Kaveri river bank with lovely scenic beauty to adore. People from parts of the country cherish this temple shrine every day.
